Until the opening of the channel, the circumnavigation of the dangerous Cape Horn has been the only alternative to get from the east coast to the west coast of North America. Back in 1523, Emperor Charles V was the first to suggest the construction of a navigable waterway between the Atlantic and the Pacific, but it took until 1906 until the technical knowledge allowed to begin work on the Panama Canal. Nowadays, 70% of the goods from and to US ports are transported through this waterway.
