The colonization of Europe began about 800.000 years ago – almost half a million years after Asia had been colonized from Africa. Over the different ages, especially the Greeks and Romans left their mark. During the time of the Roman Empire, Europe had its first heyday until that empire declined and the Middle Ages, also known as the “Dark Ages”, began. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Renaissance brought about a rediscovery of ancient art and philosophy. The impressive works of the ancient world are still fascinating today.
