In 1867, Alexander II of Russia sold the Russian colony Alaska to America for only 7,2 million U.S. dollars. On October 6th, the American flag was hoisted in the capital of Sitka. The change of government was accompanied by a change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. Thus, the inhabitants of Alaska went to bed on October 6th and awakened on October 18th the next day.
