More than 1000 years ago, the Polynesians have already been excellent navigators even without compass and sextant. The continuous observation of the sun, the moon and the planets was of particular importance and the courses were determined by means of the stars and constellations. Thus it was possible to do the 21,600 nautical miles from Tahiti to Hawaii without any aid. The secret knowledge of “reading the sea” was handed down from one generation to another by oral tradition.
